Colonel Peter Gansevoort was one of the Colonels under the command of Major General Sullivan during the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign. After accompanying the campaign during most of its time in New York General Sullivan ordered Colonel Gansevoort and 100 men to travel to Fort Stanwix.
Colonel Gansevoort and his men crossed the Cayuga Outlet and the foot of Cayuga and helped Colonel Butler destroy the village of Tichero before departing from Colonel Butler's forces just North of the present day village of Cayuga.
After leaving Colonel Butler Colonel Gansevoort and his men traveled due East crossing the Owasco Outlet at the present day site of Emerson Park South of the city of Auburn before finishing his march to Fort Stanwix.
On September 27th, 1779 Colonel Gansevoort and his men left Fort Stanwix and traveled further East to Teantontalago or Lower Mohawk Castle where he arrested every male Mohawk. They would remain incarcerated in Albany until their release in 1780.
Colonel Gansevoort wrote of Lower Mohawk Castle:
"It is remarked that the Indians live much better than most of the Mohawk River farmers, their houses [being] very well furnished with all [the] necessary household utensils, great plenty of grain, several horses, cows, and wagons"
Gansevoort's raid on Lower Mohawk Castle would become highly criticized due to the fact that the Mohawk at Lower Mohawk Castle had rejected fighting on the British side and supported the Patriot Cause.
